Amber's Story

Amber

Amber

“I first met Amber when she was just 6 weeks old and fell in love with her immediately, she was so round fluffy and curious. When we came home, the first thing Amber did was fetch a toy and bring it to me! She was a very independent dog, who loved to run and run - and swim if she got anywhere near open water. This often drove me mad when I had to wait for her to come back from her latest adventure, but you could never stay cross with her for long.

Amber was an incredibly positive dog, who just bounced with happiness and I believe that this side of her personality helped her cope with her cancer. Cancer was diagnosed after a routine trip to the vet for her annual boosters. I had noticed a lump on Amber's right hind foot. Biopsies were taken and the result came back.We were devastated. However, Nicola Bromley, the vet who originally diagnosed Amber was encouraging and we went through the options available to us. We chose to have the tumour removed and in the process, amber lost a toe and had to have skin grafts. In total, she spent 6 weeks in hospital and became something of a celebrity amongst the staff at Grove Lodge.

Amber's cancer went into remission for 3 years, but sadly came back, with tumours in her other hind leg and on her stomach. This time, because of the number of tumours and their locations, the vets decided not to operate. amber was given up to six months to live - but she out-foxed us all and bounced and ran and swam for another 2 years! One day she woke up and found it difficult to walk and stand and we had to make the very sad decision to put her to sleep at the grand old age of 10. The empathy and caring that the staff showed Amber was second to none, right down to the cuddles, biscuits and the pink blanket for her to lie on. Amber certainly had a good innings and despite her illness lived life to the full. We miss her very much.”

Thank you,
Laura Reynolds and all of the other 4-legged furry friends of Amber.
